Every once in a while, we make a fool of ourselves.
Thanks to the powers of social media, we can now do it publicly.
Those who have hurt and humiliated themselves, vent their frustration on Facebook and start fishing for some sympathy:
“Life is so unfair! Look what happened to me. Client X did this. Colleague Y said that. My agent doesn’t love me anymore… Woe is me!”
Yes, you’re a miserable son of a gun. Let’s have a pity party and invite some friends. Shared suffering is double the fun, but don’t expect me to join in.
I don’t want to borrow your sorrow and smooth it over with a platitude and a positive attitude because

Thanks Paul, again, for “touching” the open wound with salt.
That’s why I observed, saw and heard the necessary inputs from them, for quite a long time.
I had the opportunity of re-evaluate the different “school of home-based-job”
which I was NOT familiar with… and learning invaluable knowledge from their sincere and generous sharings – privately- whenever I had some questions hanging in my mind.
You’re one of those VO Actor friends that I am so grateful to have as a VO Professional.
The non-funny part was/is, those brutally honest, my favorites, were not so favorite for some.
Instead, they preferred to spread *contagious negative energy* for years, loaded themselves with static non-elect-re-city.
I proudly confess that so many “on the other side of the glass window” emphasized the respect to those VO Actors who are brutally honest, and MY favorites, as well.
Being a very “observative ;)” and patient person, I finally stepped forward for the e passion and joy, that has NO Expiration Date for me, decidedly and truely completes and sparkles my SOUL as a Catalyst…
Hoping to work with You and other great “VO performers” via NYC.

P.S. Those questions marks were as a result of the technical issue, not been put by me.They were the “symbols” which could not been read.
Nice to get some tough love every now and
Again. Just as in “The troublesome truth about voice over” there are challenging things around every corner. Best be ready! Thanks again Paul
Dear Paul,
Stop complaining. 😉
Best always,

And not just in voice-overs Paul … I know folk in other industries who behave in exactly the same way! Well said.
Paul, I wish sometimes you would just get to the point and say what’s on your mind (insert rim shot here) I always enjoy your “no nonsense” approach.
I’m sorry to say I’ve made some of the very mistakes you’re talking about, but I can also say that I have learned from my many mistakes too.
Thanks for sharing your insight and wisdom.
Warm regards,
Paul
Best…blog…ever
“Person up to your problems.” Yep. Just made my day.
Thanks, Paul ~
Paul, that was such a scary blog to read at first. I imagined the newbie reading that and getting out quick! Then I realized that some people do whine, they don’t want to do the homework, prep work, and everything else involved in this industry. I think the best advice I was given when I began was…audition and forget it…the thick skin approach, but I now have a sign in my studio that says “Person up to your problems”! Thanks for your words of wisdom as always.
Paul, they, (whomever “they” are)say great wisdom comes from experience–thank you for sharing your wisdom via of your experience–it can save beginners like me a lot of frustrations and headaches, time and money!
I can relate to the “sprinter becoming a marathoner” after a big session with a rush order. And then came the revisions, caused by the client sending wrong phonetics… again with a short turnaround. But it’s all part of the job. I view these things as opportunities to learn, and to gain a reputation as the “go to” voice guy. Yeah, every once in a while we all grumble, “what unpaid intern wrote this?” But I try to remember it’s just another tricky day in this biz.
Here is a way to look at some of these people you mention. Is it an obsequious way of letting people know what they are doing? Trying to be blasé. Just a thought?
Well said sir. Suck it up, learn from it and move on.

Brilliantly stated, as always, my newly connected colleague. That’ll teach ’em! 🙂
